When our journey began, nearly a year ago,

we didn’t know what this film would be. We knew only that the city of Bakersfield has a unique, vibrant and criminally under-documented music scene. Incredible stories that had never been told before, and that to tell these stories, we would be making a fun, experimental rock ‘n roll documentary film.

When we began interviewing people for this project, what we found was a true rouges gallery of roughnecks, rebels, misfits, and music lovers. Men and women united by a shared experience of living in a hard town and turning to music to cope.

So we let the cameras roll and we listened.

What we found were five interconnected stories that make up this film. A vibrant cast of characters tell their stories in truly unique and unforgettable ways. Sometimes loud, aggressive and shocking, other times nearly whispering their heartbreak with wavering breath.

Our obedience is to honesty. Our loyalty is to history and presenting not only the stories, but also the emotion and attitudes of the people who lived them.

There is a chance that something you hear in this film may offend you, and that’s fine. We are pushing the envelope. We promise however that if you stick around and join us on a wild ride into the lunatic side of rock ‘n roll, there is a lot of fun to be had and you may even be uplifted.

In BONES OF BRUNDAGE, we tell the story of Bakersfield’s underground music scene from the 1980s to today. It’s a huge story and we hope we have done it justice.

We are very aware that there is more to the story. We wanted to include stories about The Bakersfield Sound, The Oklahoma migrations, Texas Swing and Outlaw Country, but it was just too much to include without pushing the film into 3 hours or more. It would be an injustice to try and squeeze it all together and tell both stories in shorthand.

Therefore we will be starting out on another journey of discovery soon, to explore the Country side of Bakersfield in 2019. Call it a honky tonk country-fried sequel (Working title: Dust2Dust). We don’t know what we will find but we know that working with friends, new and old, to tell the stories that need to be told is an honor and a reward in itself.
